Product Information

Our exclusive in-house black stoneware is a versatile, high-quality clay body designed for both functional and non-functional ceramic work. Ideal for hand building, wheel throwing, and sculpting, this clay offers excellent workability and strength.

When fired in an oxidation atmosphere, it matures to a rich black finish, adding depth and character to your pieces. It pairs beautifully with a wide range of Clay Station glazes, as well as other glazes , making it a flexible choice for any studio setup.

  • Develops a maroon color after bisque firing at 998°C.

  • Turns black when fired to Cone 6 (1223°C).

 Clay Properties:

Bisque Temperature  Cone 06, 998 Deg C
Bisque Porosity 12-14 %
Glaze Temperature  Cone 6, 1223 Deg C
Total Shrinkage  12-14 %
Final Porosity 0.5-2 %

  • This clay is tested under oxidation firing conditions. Not recommended for reduction firing due to a tendency to bloat.
  • Maximum working temperature is Cone 7, 1239 Deg C

These properties can change if fired at different temperature. Few clay properties differ between handmade and wheel-thrown pieces, so here's more data for clarity.

1. Hand building fired @ Cone 6 (1223 Deg C):

Dry Shrinkage  6-7 %
Fired Shrinkage  5-6 %
Final Shrinkage  12-13%
Absorption  0.5-2%

2. Wheel throwing fired @ Cone 6 (1223 Deg C):

Dry Shrinkage  7-8 %
Fired Shrinkage  6-7 %
Final Shrinkage  13-14%
Absorption  0.5-2%

Additional Information:

  • Dry shrinkage is determined by measuring the reduction in shrinkage after the manufacturing stage to the bone-dried stage.

  • Firing shrinkage is determined by measuring the reduction in shrinkage after the bone-dried stage to the final fired stage (Cone 6)

  • Absorption is also called as porosity of a clay body

  • Skipping bisque firing can lead to black coring/bloating—direct firing is not advised. Bloating might occur when it is fired beyond cone 7, 1239 Deg C.
  • Using a drop-and-hold firing schedule at 1180°C may help eliminate pin holing defects in glazed pieces.

Notes:

  • Test the clay body before proceeding with mass production to check for any potential bloating issues.

  • Due to the high iron content, we recommend testing your glaze with this clay body to ensure compatibility.

  • Drying and overall shrinkage of wheel-thrown pieces may vary depending on the water content used during throwing.
